Working Fire

pSingerly North East Ches. City and Charlestown fire companies were dispatched by the Cecil County 911 center for a reported structure fire at 400 W. Main St Whelan Mini Storage. Ambulance 392 was the first unit to arrive and advised of a working fire. Deputy 13 arrived to find a single story multi-unit storage facility with heavy smoke and fire showing and established command. Engine 13 arrived and took the hydrant at Main amp Jeffers St and laid about 800 for supply line. Two 1 attack lines were placed in service and crews began extinguishment. Due to insufficient water supply from the initial hydrant Engine 14 was placed on the hydrant to assist in boosting the pressure from the hydrant to Engine 13. Engine 2 was the 2nd unit into the facility. Their crew placed a 1 line in service to the opposite side of the building from Engine 13 to begin working the storage units. Due to the continued water supply issues from the hydrant Rescue 5 took the hydrant in front of the old Air Products building and laid an additional supply line to Engine 2. Engine 813 was placed on that hydrant to assist in boosting the pressure to Rescue 5. The Town of Elkton was also notified of the need to boost the water pressure to the town system. Additional equipment responded from Perryville Oxford Rising Sun and Newark. Crews worked with K-12 saws to open all the storage units in order to make access to the building for suppression purposes. Crews worked to gain access to 22 storage units which were involved. The FM and power companies along with the town water maintenance were all notified. One firefighter was transported to Union Hospital for exhaustion. Units remained on scene for about 3 hours. The fire is under investigation by the SFMO. ppnbspppall photos courtesy of the Cecil Whigp
